The Effect of Self-Assessment on Students' WritingCompetency (An Experimental Research Conducted at Tenth Grade Students of SMAN 3 Singaraja in The Academic Year 2009/2010)

ABSTRACT

This article was written based on an experimental research involving two variables, namely: self-assessment and English writing competency. This experimental research aimed to investigate the effect of self-assessment on students’ writing competency. To conduct this research, sixty-two students of tenth grade of SMAN 3 Singaraja in the academic year 2009/2010 as the sample. Those students were selected randomly by random sampling technique and used the Posttest-Only Control Groups Design as the research design. This research discovered there is any significant difference in writing competency between students assessed by self-assessment and those assessed by conventional assessment. Moreover, the students’ writing competency that was assessed by self-assessment is higher than those assessed by conventional assessment.
