ABSTRACT
The present study was aimed at comparing Balinese and Westerners’ cultural values through a focus on communication routines in Lovina area. In comparing the cultural values, the researcher specified in two types of comparison. First, the researcher compared the cultural values on verbal communication, and the second, the researcher compared the cultural values on nonverbal communication.
This study was designed as descriptive study, which described the data found according to the factual situation in the field. In collecting the intended data, the researcher used two instruments namely: tape recorder and field note. Tape recorder was used to record the verbal communication, while the field note was used to note the nonverbal communication.
The result of this study showed that there were six types of verbal communication, performed those are: greeting, addressing, complementing, offering, advising, and thanking. Two differences of cultural values between Balinese and Westerners’ cultures were found in verbal communication, they are: addressing and advising. Besides, there were five types of non verbal communication, performed those are: eye contact (oculesics), personal space (proxemics), paralanguage (vocalics), body language (kinecsis), and touch (haptics). Four of them were different in Balinese and Westerners’ cultures, they are: eye contact (oculesics), personal space (proxemics), paralanguage (vocalics), and touch (haptics).
