ANALYZING THE SPEECH FEATURES USED BY FEMALE STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION DEPARTMENT OF UNDIKSHA IN GOSSIPING ACTIVITY: A Study of Sociolinguistics

Abstract

The study was aimed at analyzing the speech features used by the female students in doing gossiping activity. The study was conducted among the female students of English education Department (EED). The analysis attempted to know the speech features as well as the topics which commonly occurred while they were gossiping. The research design of the study used multi–case study, specifically by using a theoretical replication stage. In the data analysis, two theories were used as the fundamental basis, namely topic categorization based on Deborah Jones (1990) and the theories of Lakoff (1975).      

The findings of this study showed that all categories of topics appeared randomly in all conversation. In the part of speech features, there were five speech features found in this study. Those five speech features were Lexical Hedges, Intensifier, Tag question, Swear Words and Question Intonation. Overall, all topics emerged 33 times in 16 conversation investigated. On the other hand, those five speech features emerged 267 times. The emergence of these speech features indicated that the female students of EED were uncertainty and less confidence in gossiping activity. In term of the quality, their speech appeared to be unconvincing and less reliable.
