THE USE OF DIRECTIVES BY TEACHERS IN DOWN SYNDROME AND AUTISM CLASS (PRE-SCHOOL) AT SJAKI-TARI-US FOUNDATION SELAT VILLAGE, BULELENG

ABSTRACT


This study aimed at investigating the directives use by the teachers of Down Syndrome and Autism Class at Sjaki-Tari-Us Foundation, Selat Village, Buleleng. The focus was on investigating the types of directives which were used by the teachers in teaching-learning process, investigating the ways of teachers in giving directives in Down Syndrome and Autism class, and investigating the reason of their ways in giving the directives. The subjects of this study were teachers of Down Syndrome and Autism class. Observation and interview methods were used in collecting data. The researcher directly observed the classroom interaction between teachers and students. Resources used in collecting the data were recorder, note, and photographs. The recorder used to record the teachers’ utterances during the classroom interaction, while note was used to take note on any students’ responses to the teachers’ utterances which could not be recorded through recording. The findings were in the form of utterances expressed by the teachers as the subjects of the study. From the utterances, only the directives were focused for the further analysis. The result showed that directives used mostly were requestives, questions, prohibitive, and advisories directives. Sign language and pictures/pictos were also important as the particular ways in teaching Down Syndrome and Autistic children. In other words, there were directives used by the teachers in Down Syndrome and Autism class (Pre-School) at Sjaki-Tari-Us Foundation, Selat Village, Buleleng.
